Scholarship Description
International Tuition Awards (ITA) assist international graduate students with their tuition fees if they are registered full-time in research-oriented master’s and doctoral programs. If you are eligible, you can apply it towards your Master of Science in Forestry (MSc) programme.

UBC Forestry offers a research (thesis) -based Master's program within a Science (MSc) or an Applied Science (MASc) credential. Thesis Master's students receive pembinaan in research techniques, and also make contributions in their own right to the body of knowledge. The type of work undertaken by an MSc or MASc student tends to be focused, looking at a specific problem, and is generally completed within 2-3 years.

In addition to being part of the Faculty of Forestry, MSc and MASc students are also considered members of one of our three Faculty departments, based on their supervisor’s affiliation.

Eligibility
Admission to the Master of Science (MSc) aktivitas requires an academic background in science, applied science, agricultural sciences, social science or forestry. Admission to the Master of Applied Science (MASc) aktivitas requires an academic background in applied science or engineering.

Criteria for International Tuition Award (ITA):
Students are eligible for the International Tuition Award if they meet the following criteria:
  • Students must hold a valid Student Authorization (Study Permit)
  • Students must be registered full-time in one of the eligible graduate programs, like the thesis-based MSc or MASc in Forestry. 
  • Students who receive external funding (e.g., their home government, Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship, or other funding agencies like CIDA, WUSC, DAAD, CONACYT, CONICYT, NSF, etc.) for their tuition which is equal to or higher than the value of the International Tuition Award are not eligible.

We have approximately 85-95 thesis-based master’s students in any given year, which is about 30% of our total Forestry graduate student population

Sponsorship duration
The scholarship is paid in 3 equal instalments - one at the beginning of each term. September and January instalments are assigned in late August each year. May instalment is assigned in late April each year

Scholarship benefits
The Faculty of Forestry offers excellent courses and cutting edge research across a spectrum of disciplines related to forestry, and opportunities for interdisciplinary learning. Graduate students work with leading scientists in state-of-the-art facilities within the Forest Sciences Centre and at any of two research forests.

For applicants with Canadian or USA credentials, we require the equivalent of a four-year bachelor’s degree with a minimum overall average in the B+ range in third- and fourth-year courses (i.e. at UBC, courses numbered 300-499). Please be sure to read full details about minimum admission requirements for master’s degree programs set by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
For applicants with International credentials, we require an academic degree and GPA as detailed by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies International Evaluation Manual.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION: Students do not need to apply for the International Tuition Awards, as all international students who are eligible are automatically considered for this scholarship. Awards are assigned on the Student Information System, and, once assigned, can be viewed by logging onto the Student Service Centre. Students must verify that they meet the eligibility requirements accepting the scholarship online, via the Student Service Centre.

DEADLINES:
Application deadlines for the research (thesis) -based Master's in Forestry aktivitas are November 15 for the Summer Term (May), March 15 for the Fall Term (September) and July 15 for the Winter Term (January).
