Scholarship Description
This University of Canterbury (UC) International First Year Scholarship, established in 2012 by the University of Canterbury, recognises and supports top-achieving international students commencing an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury.
The scholarship, which is of a year tenure, invites applications from international students from secondary schools, pre-university institutions, universities or other tertiary institutions outside New Zealand.
This scholarship recognises and supports top-achieving international students commencing an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury. Applications open to international students from around the world in June every year. The university invites applications from all qualified applicants as from June 2018.
Eligibility
Eligible candidates must be full-fee-paying international students and may not be citizens of New Zealand or Australia, or holders of New Zealand residence class visas (see 'PLEASE NOTE' section below).
They must be completing, or have completed on or after 1 January of the year before the year of application, a University Entrance-level qualification that permits entry into a University of Canterbury undergraduate degree programme.
Such programmes of study may be at secondary schools, pre-university institutions, universities or other tertiary institutions. Programmes that qualify students for entry into the second year of a University of Canterbury undergraduate degree programme may be included, but the scholarship will not be awarded for tenure during a third year of undergraduate study. Applicants should check the University’s “Education Systems of Study” webpage, which lists qualifying programmes by country.
Students who are undertaking, or have completed, a Foundation Studies programme at the UC International College are eligible to apply.
Selection criteria:
The scholarship will be awarded by the University of Canterbury Council, on the recommendation of a Selection Committee. In making its recommendations the Committee will consider:

Number of awards
Up to twenty-five scholarships may be awarded. If in any year there are fewer candidates of sufficient merit than there are scholarships available, fewer awards will be made.
Sponsorship duration
Awards are tenable for up to one year.
In the event of a recipient’s withdrawal from full-time study in an undergraduate degree programme, the scholarship will be withdrawn, and any paid funds may be recovered.
Continuation of a scholarship is conditional on satisfactory academic progress and adherence to the University’s statutes and regulations.
Scholarship benefits
The scholarship is awarded to values specified at the discretion of the Selection Committee. Currently it is awarded with values of $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000.
Method of Application
Applications for the scholarship must be made on the appropriate form, which can be obtained from the official website (link to it is below), and must be forwarded to the Scholarships Office, not later than 5.00pm on 15 August in the year prior to enrolment, or, if this is not a business day, by 5.00pm on the next business day. Application forms are available on the official webpage approximately 8 weeks (i.e. around mid June) before applications close.

DEADLINES:
Candidates must have applied for admission to the University of Canterbury by 15 August in the year prior to their intended first year of enrolment at the University of Canterbury. Scholarship application forms become available as from mid June.
PLEASE NOTE:
The scholarship must be taken up in the year following application.
If, during the tenure of a scholarship, a recipient’s immigration status changes so that he or she is no longer a full-fee paying international student and thereby obtains a partial refund of academic fees from the University, the scholarship will be withdrawn and any scholarship money paid will be refunded to the University.
Unless otherwise specified in the offer letter, an offer of a scholarship will lapse if it is not accepted, in writing, within one calendar month of the date of the offer.
The scholarship is co-tenable with any other award unless the conditions of the other award preclude this.
